Once a thriving center of the nation’s steel industry, Gary played a crucial role in shaping America’s industrial boom. As the second-largest city in the state, it was a place of opportunity, drawing hard-working families seeking stable jobs and a promising future.  Shifts beginning in the 1970s, including steel plant closures and populations changes, caused significant social and economic voids that the city still struggles to fill. Today, Gary struggles with poverty rates significantly above state averages:
